Artist  Mary Edmonia Lewis (c July 4, 1844 - September 17, 1907) was an American sculptor who worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. It is the first woman from the American heritage of African descent and the United States original international accounting achieve fame and recognition and sculptor in the world of Fine Arts. It is known for its work to integrate the issues related to blacks and indigenous peoples of the Americas in sculpture neoclassical style. It emerged during the full days of the civil war crisis, and by the end of the 19th century, and was the only black woman who was involved in and HAD beens reconnu to any degree from the American artistic mainstream. In 2002, a researcher Mulvey Kitty Asante listed Edmonia Lewis in his list of the 100 greatest Americans of African descent
